postheadericon Poll: Schwarzenegger as unpopular as predecessor he helped recall

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is now as unpopular as former Gov. Gray Davis (D) was when Schwarzenegger defeated him in a historic recall election, according to a new Field poll.

Just 22 percent of California voters approve of Schwarzenegger’s job performance, with 70 percent disapproving. Those are exactly the same numbers Davis had in August 2003. In October 2003, California voters recalled Davis and voted in Schwarzenegger as a replacement.

The Field poll write-up notes that Davis and Schwarzenegger are now tied for “lowest job ratings ever given a sitting California Governor in the more than fifty years that The Field Poll has been conducting its job assessment measures.”

Schwarzenegger is equally unpopular with Democrats (22 percent approval) and Republicans (21 percent approval.) He garners just 21 percent support from “strongly conservative voters” and 19 percent from “moderately conservative voters.”
