House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced the appointment of a new inspecter general of the lower chamber on Friday.

As the first female inspector general, Theresa Grafenstine was unanimously recommended for the position by a bipartisan panel of lawmakers from the House Administration Committee. Grafenstine was serving as the House's acting-inspector general and she replaces Jim Cornell, who stepped down earlier this year.

“Ms. Grafenstine will be an independent voice in continuing our efforts to ensure accountability and transparency in financial matters and the management of House operations," said Pelosi in a statement.

"Her decades of experience in government, including 12 years in the House’s Office of Inspector General, will ensure that the people’s business is conducted with efficiency and that public funds are used responsibly. She will play an essential role in the House and all of us are grateful for her energy and experience."
