postheadericon NJ senators hopeful for US World Cup

New Jersey Senators Frank Lautenberg (D) and Robert Menendez (D) expressed their continued enthusiasm for a US-hosted World Cup eight or 12 years from now on Twitter Friday.

Both encouraged constituents to sign a petition to make New Jersey an official host city in the event of a World Cup hosted by the US. They noted the state's recently opened New Meadowlands Stadium as a potential game venue.

FIFA President Joseph 'Sepp' Blatter toured the stadium in July 2009.

Both New Jersey senators are part of bipartisan coalition of lawmakers that has lobbied FIFA to bring the World Cup to the states. Led by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), the group contacted Blatter in late June to support a bid already submitted by the U.S. Soccer Federation.

On Friday afternoon, Lautenberg tweeted:

Lautenberg wants to bring the FIFA World Cup to NJ's Meadowlands. Show your support for @goUSAbid by voting here: http://bit.ly/cyCtn1

Menendez then retweeted the message, with a note: "Go NJ!"
