Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) tweeted Friday in memory of renowned climate scientist Steve Schneider, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Monday.

Markey is chairman of the House Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming.

He said:

Steve Schneider was early & influential voice in fight against climate change. He will be missed… http://bit.ly/dfbbib

Markey was not alone in noting Schneider’s passing via Twitter. Former U.S. vice president and climate activist Al Gore had a similar sentiment on Monday:

Schneider was on the faculty of Stanford University when he died. He was a powerful member of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and a recipient of a MacArthur “genius grant.”
