postheadericon Gibbs comments swayed Twitter toward Republicans, analysis finds

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs’s midterm-election comments correlated with a substantial increase in the number of pro-Republican tweets, social media analysis firm Crimson Hexagon reported Wednesday.

Gibbs admitted the potential for Republicans to reclaim the House during an appearance on a Sunday morning show.

According to Crimson Hexagon vice president Melyssa Plunkett-Gomez, tweets related to the midterm elections had been 57 percent pro-Democrat and 47 percent pro-Republican in the days leading up to Gibbs’s comments.

Those numbers shifted after his “Meet the Press” appearance to 53 percent pro-Republican and 43 percent pro-Democrat, she said, while the overall number of tweets about the midterms nearly doubled overall.

The firm’s analysis of social media chatter aggregates and tallies tweets on specific political and social issues.
