postheadericon Facebook to lobby against employers requiring passwords

Facebook said Friday that it would fight recent efforts by employers to require job applicants to turn over their login information to the social network, lobbying lawmakers to restrict and threatening legal action against companies who ask for passwords to access the site.

The statement posted to Facebook's website comes after The Associated Press reported earlier this week that there was a growing trend in which employers would ask for access to applicant's profiles to check for embarrassing or potentially damaging information.

"If you are a Facebook user, you should never have to share your password, let anyone access your account, or do anything that might jeopardize the security of your account or violate the privacy of your friends. We have worked really hard at Facebook to give you the tools to control who sees your information," wrote Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer for policy, in a note on the social media site.
