Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl's (R-Ariz.) announcement that he would retire in 2012 prompted strong reactions from fellow lawmakers on Thursday.

Sen. John McCain, Kyl's senior Republican colleague in Arizona, tweeted:

It has been an honor and a privilege serving w/ @SenJonKyl as my partner in representing the great state of Arizona. He will be missed.

McCain also said in statement that he wished Jon and his wife, Caryll, all the best. “Jon will most assuredly go down in history as one of Arizona’s most effective advocates in Washington,” he said. The two Republican senators have been on the same side of many issues over the years they’ve shared in the Senate.
