postheadericon Boehner raises campaign cash off of spending cuts

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) sought to raise campaign cash on Thursday off of the spending cuts the House approved last weekend.

Boehner, in a fundraising e-mail for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), encouraged donations before the committee's month-end fundraising deadline.

"Last November you sent Republicans and Democrats a message â€" CUT SPENDING," Boehner wrote. "Last week, House Republicans did just that, passing a bill to keep the government running for the next seven months that includes one of the largest spending cuts in American history."

The Speaker even worked in a jab at "union bosses" who Boehner said were "intent"  on maintaining high levels of government spending. That call-out comes amid ongoing labor protests in Wisconsin; Boehner has weighed in on behalf of the GOP governor's labor reform plans in that state.

Boehner sought donations for the NRCC before the end of the month, wh! en donations are totaled for February and submitted to the Federal Election Commission in March.

For the Speaker, his plea was as much about collecting campaign cash as it was about reminding GOP voters that the House had followed through on its promise to cut spending.

He isn't the only political figure looking for traction from the House's vote, though. Democrats released radio ads in the districts of some vulnerable Republicans this week, hitting them for voting for the very spending cuts the Speaker is now promoting.

Boehner's done more outside the fundraising e-mails to help strengthen the House GOP going into the 2012 elections. Last month, he formally announced a new, consolidated ! political effort in his name, "Team Boehner," to help ! retain t he Republican majority next fall.
