Freshman Rep. Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) underwent successful heart surgery this week and is recovering from the procedure, according to news reports.

Hanna's chief of staff Justin Stokes said the congressman had mitral valve surgery this week, WSYR-TV reported Wednesday. The mitral valve helps regulate blood flow on the left side of the heart.

The House is not in session this week, and lawmakers are in their home district for a scheduled Presidents Day recess.

Hanna was one of six New York Republicans to win races in Democratic-held districts in the 2010 midterm elections. He defeated two-term Rep. Michael Arcuri (D-N.Y.)
