postheadericon Boehner: Spending cuts part of GOP effort to 'liberate our economy'

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) touted a government-spending package unveiled by House Republicans late Friday night, arguing that it’s part of a GOP effort to “liberate our economy” from big government.

The package, which would fund the governmen through the end of the fiscal year, cuts current spending by $58 billion and represents a $100 billion cut from Obama’s 2011 budget request, which was never enacted. The massive cuts were a result of a challenge to GOP leadership by Tea Part freshmen, who argued that Republicans initial proposal to cut $74 billion from Obama’s 2011 budget request was not steep enough.

Boehner warned that the package is only the beginning of Republican efforts to reel in spending.
