postheadericon Grijalva: Tucson 'in shock and numb'

Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who represents part of Tucson said the community has been left "in shock and numb" after a shooting there that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in critical condition.

"Our community is devastated by this," he said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "Our community has a million people, but it's small. We're all feeling it and wondering what to do next."

A gunman opened fire Saturday at a meet-and-greet hosted by Giffords, leaving fourteen people injured and six dead. Among those killed was a federal judge and a young girl, and Giffords was shot in the head at close range. A suspect, 22-year old Jared Loughner, is in custody.

Fellow Arizona Congressman Rep. Trent Franks (R), appearing on the same panel, called the shooter "deranged monster" and the act "an attack not only on freedom and the country itself, but an attack on humanity."

Grijalva said Giffords was a "rising star" and a leader in the community. Franks said that! , despite their differing political views, they got along well.

"Never one time, did even the slightest cross word or unkindness every pass between us," he said. "This is a precious decent woman that did not deserve what happened to her.

"We're a country to tries to solve our problems by ballots not bullets," he added later.
