Just one in four Americans who describe themselves as “liberal” also embrace the term “progressive,” according to a new Gallup poll.

In recent years, many Democratic politicians have adopted the term “progressive” in response to what they see as an effort by Republicans to demonize “liberals.”

But the Gallup poll shows that label has not caught on nationwide.

Just 12 percent of Americans â€" and only 26 percent of those who call themselves “liberals” â€" say the term “progressive” applies to them.

Seventeen percent of self-described liberals reject the progressive label, while 57 percent are unsure.
