postheadericon Lawmakers want meeting with Obama on Korean trade deal

Lawmakers concerned about additional foreign trade deals are asking for a meeting with President Obama to outline their concerns.

Rep. Mike Michaud's (D-Maine) office released a letter to the president signed by 109 lawmakers asking for a meeting that Michaud said "will give my colleagues and me an opportunity to express our support for a revised trade policy that creates jobs in all sectors of the economy."

While Obama has said he will pursue trade agreements with Latin American countries next year, it is a likely agreement with Korea that inspired the lawmakers to reach out.

“Passing the Korea-U.S. FTA without making major improvements to the pact will continue our flawed trade policy that has led to the off-shoring of U.S. jobs, the decline of our manufacturing sector, and our ballooning trade deficit," Michaud said in a statement.

He added: "The American people do not support more of the same bad trade deals for good reason:  they are! bad for our economy and they take away American jobs. We want to work with this administration to get trade right, and a meeting with the president will help us do that.”
