postheadericon First Lady does PR push for healthcare reform

First Lady Michelle Obama wrote Sunday evening to promote her husband's signature legislative achievement, healthcare reform.

Mrs. Obama wrote through President Obama's political arm, Organizing for America, to promote the healthcare reform bill for which the president had pushed for months and signed into law in March.

"When you hear about the new health reform law these days, too much talk is focused on the political," Michelle Obama wrote. "What I've found is that most Americans just want to know how this new law helps their families stay healthy -- and how it reduces their costs."

But Mrs. Obama's email to promote health reform comes amidst a political season in which healthcare reform, and whether or not it should be repealed -- as Republicans have demanded -- is a top issue before the fall's congressional elections.

The first lady had pushed for health reform throughout the fight in Congress over reform legislation, esp! ecially as it related to her campaign against child obesity. The White House has pivoted, though, since the bill was signed into law to promote the benefits that could be threatened by the full or partial repeal of the legislation that Republican leaders have pledged.

Mrs. Obama encouraged email recipients to visit a new government website outlining changes to the law.

"Each of us needs to take responsibility for our own health and the health of our families, and the new health reform law can help," she said. "That's why I'm writing today -- to make sure you and Americans across the country know how their health plans are getting better day by day under reform."
