postheadericon Warren: I want Obama to finish his evolution on same-sex marriage

Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren (D) urged President Obama to finish his evolution on same-sex marriage.

"I want to see the president evolve because I believe that is right; marriage equality is morally right," Warren said in an interview withThe Washington Blade published Thursday.

Warren's comments reflect increasing calls from the more liberal members of the Democratic party for Obama to fully embrace same-sex marriage. For more than a year now Obama, who is officially against same-sex marriage but pro-civil union, has said in recent months his views are "evolving" on the issue.

Warren also said adopting same-sex marriage as part of the Democratic party platform woul! d help highlight the Defense of Marriage Act, which bars same sex couples from getting married. The Obama administration has stopped defending the law and voiced support for repeal of the legislation. Members of the committee who draw up the Democratic party platform during the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte in September.

"I’d be glad to see it included in the Democratic platform," Warren added to the paper. "It helps raise awareness of the impact of DOMA and it helps build support to repeal it."

Warren, the mastermind behind the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, isn't the only prominent Democrat to call for the party to embrace same-sex marriage. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who is chairing the 2012 DNC, recently urged the party to adopt same sex marriage in its platform.
