postheadericon Time for a principled stand for Middle East peace

RAMALLAH - As a Palestinian who has devoted her life to the pursuit of liberty and the achievement of peace with justice in the Middle East, I urge President Obama to take a principled stand on the side of peace, justice, freedom, and human dignity in the Middle East
 
The people of Palestine have been languishing for decades under a cruel Israeli system of control and subjugation. This system has found expression in Israel’s unceasing expropriation of Palestinian land and resources; continued construction of illegal settlements, apartheid walls and bypass roads; the cultural, historical, demographic and territorial distortion of Jerusalem; and the eviction and deportation of Palestinians from their homes and land. These acts are rapidly eroding any chance for peace and the creation of an independent, sovereign, democratic Palestinian state.
 
In this year’s State of the Union address, Mr. Obama boldly said, "And while it’s ultimately up to the! people of the region to decide their fate, we will advocate for those values that have served our own country so well. We will stand against violence and intimidation. We will stand for the rights and dignity of all human beings â€" men and women; Christians, Muslims and Jews. We will support policies that lead to strong and stable democracies and open markets, because tyranny is no match for liberty."
