postheadericon Social media becoming 'mainstream' at State Department, says aide

The US government runs more than 190 Twitter accounts and more than 150 Facebook pages, according Alec Ross, who works on social media for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Ross, Clinton's senior advisor for innovation, described the influence of social media as heralding “a massive shift in geo-political power.”

Social media has become a "mainstream" part of business, Ross told The Next Web in an interview published in part on Thursday. 

That trend holds true for the US government and particularly the State Department, which has shifted much of its digital resources to social media over the past year.
