postheadericon Santorum raises $9m, has $2.6m on hand

Rick Santorum’s campaign reported Tuesday that it raised $9 million in February and had $2.6 million cash on hand.

Santorum has been running a campaign that aides have prided as “lean,” so a $9 million haul for the month of February isn’t bad.

But the $2.6 million cash on hand suggests Santorum is being pushed to spend a lot of his money quickly.

A pro-Santorum super-PAC â! €" the Red, White, and Blue Fund â€" has, at times, been the primary group advertising for Santorum in some states.

The fundraising announcement came the same day of the Illinois primary, where recent polls have found Mitt Romney leading Santorum and the rest of the field.

Over the weekend, Santorum announced that he planned to hold his Illinois campaign party in Gettysburg, Pa., where President Lincoln gave his signature Civil War speech. The announcement might have been an indication that the Santorum campaign did not expect to win the Illinois contest.
