postheadericon Sen. Coburn undergoes prostate cancer treatment

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) is recovering from surgery to treat prostate cancer, according to his office.

"Dr. Coburn underwent a procedure this week to treat an early-stage incidence of prostate cancer. He is expected to make a full recovery and return to his full-time duties later this month," Coburn spokesman John Hart said to CNN.

{mosads}Coburn underwent the surgery Monday in Tulsa. This is the third time the senator has been treated for cancer â€" he suffered from malignant melanoma in 1975 and colon cancer in 2003. Before winning his Senate seat, Coburn was a doctor, focusing in obstetrics.

Coburn was reelected in 2010, and says he plans to retire from the Senate in 2016.
