The state of Georgia imposed a tax lien on Republican frontrunner Herman Cain in 2008 for $8,558 in unpaid income taxes and penalties, according to multiple reports. But the Cain campaign said that the lien was imposed while the candidate sought an extension as he underwent treatment for Stage 4 colon cancer.

"Mr. Cain responded in a timely manner to the delinquency notice sent by the Georgia Department of Revenue but was unable to stop the process that ultimately led to the filing of the tax lien," said J.D. Gordon, a spokesman for Cain, to ABC.

Gordon said that Cain had filed for a six-month federal extension to cover his 2006 income taxes, allowing him more time to sort out his personal finances and medical expenses. That extension was granted, and Cain mistakingly believed it to also cover his state tax obligations. But Cain received a notice of past-due taxes from Georgia in late 2007.
