postheadericon Some things may lead to 'big things'

Republicans, Democrats, or Independents - Americans above all are a pragmatic people.  The vast majority â€" 80% according to a recent Gallup poll â€" say they want Democrats and Republicans to work together and with the President to pass legislation in the next Congress. In fact, most are in favor of compromising to get something done over “sticking to principle,” if sticking to principle results in gridlock.

When the president and Congress cooperated to pass legislation in the surprisingly productive lame-duck session that just ended, the public took note â€" and rewarded both with a significant bump in approval ratings. The question now is whether there’s more where that came from. 

Fortunately, in the highly contentious and necessary debates over the federal debt, energy and health care, the president and Congress have identified ideas each side can embrace. While comprehensive solutions may be difficult to come by, targeted reforms are ! achievable and can win bipartisan support.
