Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) has spoken for the first time since she was shot, according to media reports.

A Giffords aide cited in the stories said the Arizona lawmaker asked for a piece of toast. The simple request is the latest major milestone in Giffords's recovery, which doctors have called miraculous.

In a Facebook message on Tuesday, her husband, astronaut and Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, said the congresswoman is continuing to make enormous progress in her recovery from the Arizona shooting rampage last month that claimed the lives of six and wounded Giffords and 12 others. Giffords was shot in the head from close range.

Last week, Kelly announced that he would resume training for a flight he's scheduled to command later this month.
