postheadericon Poll: Americans optimistic about political changes in Egypt

Roughly two-thirds of Americans think the political changes going on in Egypt are positive both for Egypt and the U.S., a new poll found.

According to a Gallup poll released Monday, 66 percent of the public think Egypt will benefit from the political changes, and nearly the same number â€" 60 percent â€" think the U.S. will, too.

The poll found Democrats more likely to be sympathetic to the protesters calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down.

About 77 percent of Democrats think the political developments in Egypt are good for Egypt, and 71 percent of Democrats think the political changes are good for the United States.

Gallup found that 59 percent of Republicans think the political developments are "mostly good" for Egypt, and 51 percent think they are good for the U.S.

Overall, 82 percent of respondents were "sympathetic" to the protesters, with 11 percent "unsympathetic" and 6 percent unsure.
The poll comes the same day that House Democrats sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) requesting an emergency resolution in support of pro-democracy Egyptian protesters.
