postheadericon Pelosi to GOP: 'Show us the jobs'

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) trotted out on Tuesday her own variation of the Republican mantra of "Where are the jobs?" used to some effect against her and House Democrats in the 2010 elections.

Pelosi charged the GOP with ignoring job creation during its first month in charge â€" a prevailing line of attack used by Democrats against the new Republican majority â€" during a speech on the House floor this afternoon opposing Republican legislation to fund government for the rest of this fiscal year.

"Democrats are saying 'no' to the Republican majority. We are saying, 'Show us the jobs,'" Pelosi said.

It's unclear whether "Show us the jobs" will become a recurring refrain for Democrats the way "Where are the jobs?" was for Republicans over the past two years. Pelosi herself said that the GOP mantra was effective in handing defeat to Democrats in the 2010 elections.

Democrats in both the House and Senate have made jobs the centerpiece of their criticism of the new, GOP-led House. They argue that the House has taken up no legislation to create jobs, and has instead focused on symbolic votes on repealing healthcare or limiting abortion rights, or, absent that, spending bills.

Republicans contend that their efforts to cut spending and rein in regulations are very much intended toward job creation.

"Cutting spending, in my view, will in fact lead to a better environment to create jobs in our country," House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham yest! erday.

As for the GOP, they're still not done us! ing "Whe re are the jobs?" as a cudgel against Democrats.

"As we work to improve our economy, this week marks the 2 year anniversary of the stimulus - and we're still asking 'Where are the jobs?'" asked Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, Tuesday afternoon on Twitter.
