postheadericon Md. senator warns safety first

Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) accused Republicans in the House on Tuesday of threatening public safety in proposed budget cuts.

“Concerned. House republicans. Pulling safety $$ out of budget-- metro a big target/ come on/ over 15 dead. More injured/maimed,” she tweeted.

The GOP is expected to reveal details of a proposal that would cut $32 billion from the budget on Thursday, Feb. 10.

“Let's cut oil/gas subsidies not publc safety,” Mikulski added.

Nine people died and more than 70 were reported injured after the D.C. Metrorail Red Line crash at the Fort Totten station on June 22, 2009. Metrorail ! workers have been killed in incidents since then.

Mikulski has since introduced legislation aimed at strengthening transit safety standards, including the National Metro Safety Act, and called for a federal investigation of the system. Mikulski also spoke at a press conference for the one-year anniversary memorial of the Red Line accident last June.
