postheadericon Libya's Gadhafi on the brink of collapse

As the Gadhafi regime struggles to retain power, protesters increasingly seize control of the country. Libya’s uprising is proving the Middle East’s most violent yet. Gadhafi’s four-decade reign of repression was amongst the region’s fiercest. The furious popular reaction is the least one can expect, as is Mr. Ghadafi’s determination to persevere. 

Moammar Gadhafi’s typically incoherent and defiant speech was a desperate last-minute attempt at self-preservation by blaming unrest on external forces. The regime’s domestic and international campaign over the past decade to present Gadhafi’s son, and heir-apparent, as a gentler and reformist figure merely amounts to cosmetic generational change aimed at extending the family business.
