Advocates of the federal estate tax portray their fight as an egalitarian struggle for fairness against greedy billionaires and spoiled heiresses. 

But that self-serving explanation is false. The one-time trust fund “babies” and the super rich are just minor players in the fight over the so-called death tax. The real clash is between the owners of family businesses and family farms, many of whom could lose everything if the tax is reinstated, and the multi-billion-dollar life-insurance industry, which profiteers from the tax.
