postheadericon Steele uncertain why he lost RNC job

Michael Steele doesn't quite know why he lost his job as Republican National Committee chairman, he said Wednesday.

In response to a question by CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Steele said the Republican Party wanted someone with a different style. He lost his reelection last week to Wisconsin GOP Chairman Reince Priebus.

"I've been trying to figure that one out myself as well, and I think the reality is they wanted someone different in there," Steele said. "They wanted someone who had a different tone than I did. That's fine."

Steele said he was disappointed that he was voted out by the Republican Party.

"The only thing I ever wanted to do was do the job," Steele said.

During Steele's tenure as RNC chairman he regularly fielded criticism on how he handled his office, in particular the amount of debt the RNC collected under his watch and his penchant for verbal gaffes. Observers predicted that he would not win reelection.
