Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.), the third-ranking Senate Democrat and the chief of Democratic messaging, joined Twitter in time for the opening of the 112th Congress.

Schumer's presence on Twitter was confirmed by the Senate Democrat's official Twitter feed, "All you New Yorkers out there â€" in case you missed it, @ChuckSchumer has joined Twitter!"

The senator's staff has tweeted six times since last week. Ever a friend to the cameras, two of the Twitter messages are about his appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Schumer already has more than 4,700 followers and follows 47 people, mostly fellow lawmakers.
