Former Sen. Arlen Specter will teach a course at the University of Pennsylvania Law School starting in Fall 2011 as an adjunct faculty member.

Specter, an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania's college, lost his reelection bid in the last democratic senate primary to Rep. Joe Sestak (D-Pa.). At the law school Specter will teach a class on Congress and the Supreme Court with a focus on the confirmation process and the separation of powers according to The New York Times.

“We are delighted to welcome Arlen Specter to Penn Law,” said University of Pennsylvania Law School Dean Michael A. Fitts. “Arlen’s knowledge of the inner workings of the government and lawmaking is second to none. The insight he brings from his career in public service, par! ticularly as a leader on judicial issues, will be invaluable to our students as they prepare for their own careers in the law.”

Specter served as a Republican for thirty years but switched parties in 2008 which helped give the democrats a filibuster proof majority. He said that he is looking forward to continuing his public service through his new job as a member of the law school faculty.

“I’m excited to join a vibrant academic community that’s on the cutting edge of today’s most important legal issues,” Specter said. “As I transition to a new phase of my career, teaching at Penn Law will be a fantastic opportunity to join an outstanding community of scholars, continue my work in public policy and the law, and impact the next generation of lawyers and policy makers.”
