postheadericon Poll: State of the Union speech won't change most Americans' opinions

Most Americans do not expect tomorrow's State of the Union to make them more confident of the country's track, a Marist poll released Monday found.

Roughly two-thirds of those surveyed do not think the president's speech will change their views of the course of the country. Twenty-three percent, meanwhile, expect the address will change their level of confidence in America's future.

{mosads}“The address is not likely to change how most feel about the nation,” Marist College ! Institute for Public Opinion Director Lee M. Miringoff said.  “But, by three to one, voters who are likely to think differently expect to be more positive.”

By party, Democrats are fairly split. Forty-five percent don't expect their opinions to change, while 41 percent do. About 66 percent of Republicans don't expect the president's speech to change their opinion, Marist found. The poll found that 66 percent of Independents don't expect the speech to sway them in any way either.

The president is widely expected to focus on the economy and jobs in his annual address to Congress. In a preview of the address released on Saturday, President Obama said he would focus on economic competitiveness and job creation.
