Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) praised a plan by the Republican Study Committee that would dramatically reduce the federal budget.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who chairs the study committee, and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) announced a plan Thursday afternoon to reduce federal spending by limiting it to 2006 levels until 2021. The proposal cuts funding to federal programs like the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In praising the proposal Jindal said federal spending should be the first priority of Congress. Sen. DeMint and Rep. Jordan estimate the proposal would cut spending by $2.5 trillion.

"The Republican Study Committee has the right idea. Cutting federal spending should be their first priority and it demands bold action, like freezing non-defense, non-veterans spending back to FY 2008 levels â€" the year before the stimulus, government takeovers and bailouts," Jindal said, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "Congress should debate these ideas and other proposals, but the bottom line is that they need to cut spending."

In exchange for agreeing to raise the debt ceiling, Republicans have called for dramatic spending similar to the plan proposed by the RSC.
