postheadericon Congressman: GOP to push ahead with healthcare law repeal in 'short order'

House Republicans plan to hold a vote to repeal President Obama's healthcare law in "fairly short order" after Congress resumes regular business following the shooting Saturday of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

GOP Rep. Michael Burgess (Texas) said Monday he and his colleagues are "heartbroken" over the attack on Giffords (D), but said "we still have to do our work."

{mosads}"We still have to do our work, and people expect us to do our work. And the repeal vote, although it's been postponed from the immediate future, I expect the House will take it up in â€" in fairly short order," he said during an interview on CNBC.

House leades in both political parties on Sunday agreed to postpone all previously planned legislative business in light of the Giffords shooting in Tucson, Ariz.

The House is expected to vote on a resolution for Giffords on Wednesday; leaders have not announced a legislative schedule beyond that. But normal business could resume as early as next week.

Lawmakers cleared the way for a vote on the repeal bill by passing the rules for debate last week.

Even though Democrats have warned that a repeal bill will go nowhere since they still control the upper chamber and the White House, Burgess said that it "could then perhaps put a little bit of the brakes on the implementation."

Burgess added that policy disputes between Democrats and Republicans have not made the Giffords incident any less tragic.

"The fact that we frequ! ently disagreed with Representative Giffords does not mitigate the fact that this was an enormous personal tragedy and tragedy for her staff," he said.
