postheadericon Majority of Americans favor ditching Electoral College

A solid majority of Americans believe that the United States should scrap the Electoral College, with 62 percent saying that they would support a constitutional amendment to change the presidential race to a popular vote, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.

"Americans show relatively little attachment to this unique invention of the country's Founding Fathers," Gallup's Lydia Saad said in a statement. "Those who advocate abolishing the Electoral College often do so on the basis that the system puts undue emphasis on a small number of swing states."

The survey comes on the heels of discussions by Republican legislators in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to change how their states would allocate electors. Under proposals being weighed in those states â€" traditional Democratic strongholds that currently have Republican governors and legislatures â€" candidates would receive electoral votes based on how they perform in specific congressional district! s rather than the winner-take-all system currently in place.
