Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on Tuesday warned Republican presidential contenders to avoid any distractions from President Obama’s political record.

Bush’s warning came in response to Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s comments this week on the issue of whether President Obama was born in the United States.

“Republican candidates should categorically reject the notion that President Obama was not born in the United States. It is a complete distraction from the failed economic policies of the President,” Bush told The Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin.

Barbour denied that he’d seen Perry’s comments about Obama’s birthp! lace, but made a similar plea when the topic was raised earlier in the day at the National Press Club.
