Newt Gingrich said Friday that same-sex marriage is a "temporary aberration" and that he believes the movement by an increasing number of state legislatures to recognize the marriages will slow.

“I believe that marriage is between a man and woman,” Gingrich said, according to the Des Moines Register. “It has been for all of recorded history, and I think this is a temporary aberration that will dissipate. I think that it ... just fundamentally goes against everything we know.”

Gingrich was speaking before a group at a Fort Dodge, Iowa, campaign event. Iowa is among six states that have recently legalized same-sex marriage.
