postheadericon Cain leads GOP pack in latest poll as Perry slips to fifth

Herman Cain leads the Republican field in the latest national poll from the New York Times and CBS, with Rick Perry falling securely into the second tier of GOP candidates on the eve of his campaign reboot.

Cain earned the support of 25 percent of GOP voters, with Mitt Romney trailing closely at 21 percent. No other candidate has half the support of the leaders, however, with Newt Gingrich polling 10 percent and Ron Paul earning the nod of 8 percent of those surveyed.

But perhaps most surprisingly is Rick Perry's meager 6 percent of support. In the September iteration of the Times/CBS poll, Perry led the field with 23 percent of Republican voters; only he and Romney earned double-digit support. At that point, Cain was the choice of only 5 percent of those surveyed, representing a swing of 20 percentage points in just over a month.
