postheadericon GOP uses SNL to promote balanced-budget amendment

Republicans turned to comedy Tuesday in making their case for a balanced budget.

“In 2006, SNL didn’t realize they were making the case for a Balanced Budget Amendment,” tweeted Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), along with a link to a clip from a Steve Martin-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live.

“If you don’t have any money, you should not buy anything,” SNL actor Amy Poehler says in the skit, which is called “Don’t Buy Stuff.”

McHenry and Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) both linked to a video originally tweeted by the Republican Study Committee.

Republicans promoted the hashtag #CutCapBalance on Twitter in advance of the House vote on the Cut, Cap and Balance Act, which passed Tuesday evening in the Republican-controlled House.
