postheadericon Investing in the next generation

With every year that’s passed since your graduation, you’ve probably forgotten that most high school students are not the apathetic hellions that classic movies like “The Breakfast Club” and “Mean Girls” have portrayed them as being. Much like the suited-up Hill staffers buzzing through your hallways every day, they are â€" you were â€" class presidents, star athletes, glee club members, exchange students, and hard workers. They care about the issues that affect them, and thanks to the 26th amendment, which celebrated its 40th anniversary on March 23rd â€" they vote.

Not every year is an election year, but every day is someone’s 18th birthday. In fact, 13,000 young people turn 18 each day. When these young citizens leave our country’s high schools, they know they have to head to the DMV if they want to get a driver’s license, and they know they have to wait until they’re 21 to hit the bar scene. But what about that important birthday that fa! lls rather quietly in between, when they earn the right to have a say in our democracy?
