postheadericon Pakistan court releases CIA contractor

A CIA contractor indicted in Pakistan on murder charges was released Wednesday.

According to multiple reports, contractor Raymond Allen Davis was released and the murder charges against him were dropped after a deal was reached to compensate the families of two Pakistani men who Davis allegedly shot.

Davis's release ends a tense standoff between the Pakistani and American governments.

Both Davis and the U.S. government claimed that Davis had been acting in self defense. Davis said that the two Pakistanis had been attempting an armed robbery when he shot and killed them.

The U.S. government has claimed that Davis had diplomatic immunity and upon his arrest should have been sent back to the U.S. immediately. Davis was arrested on January 27th.

Last month President Obama strongly urged Davis be freed and referred to him as "our diplomat." Initially, the American government officials said Davis worked for the U.S. e! mbassy in Pakistan.

Pakistan's government was under intense public pressure to not release Davis.

Pakistan is a key ally to the U.S. in the war in Afghanistan and against global terrorism.
