postheadericon US Poll: Most think Arab uprisings won't lead to democracy

The majority of people in the United States are skeptical that democracy is taking root in Arab countries where anti-government uprisings are taking place, a new poll found.

Most people in the survey said they do not think that any of the Middle Eastern countries that have seen anti-government uprisings in recent months will become "true" democracies within 10 years.

Only 26 percent of respondents in the CBS 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll said Egypt, Libya, Tunisia or Yemen will have democratic forms of government in 10 years. Sixty-eight percent pegged the chances for democracy as "low."

Broken down by ideology, 31 percent of liberals said there is a high probability that any of those countries will be democracies in the next 10 years, while 65 percent said the chances are low. Similarly, only 23 percent of conservatives said the probability is "high" that any of the countries will be democracies within ten years, while 73 percent said the ! chances are low.

The poll comes as lawmakers voice concerns about America's role in a multinational, UN-sanctioned effort to enforce a no-fly zone in Libya and protect civilians from military forces lead by Colonel Moammar Gadhafi. Legislators across the political spectrum have criticized President Obama's intervention in Libya, arguing he launched it without a clearly defined mission or exit plan.

NATO is now leading the Libya intervention after a transfer of power from U.S. forces.

President Obama will deliver an address to the nation about Libya Monday evening.
