postheadericon Waters praises Iraq withdrawal

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) took to Twitter on Thursday to praise this week's troop withdrawal from Iraq.

"Since founding Out of #Iraq Caucus in '05, I have called for responsible, safe withdrawal of all our troops. Big step toward goal today," she said.

The caucus, formed two years after the initial invasion of Iraq, has 73 members, all of whom are Democrats.

Waters noted upon its founding that the caucus members aimed to be "the main agitators in the movement to bring our troops home."

"We did not organize the caucus with the strategy to adopt an exit strategy or to try and force the administration to adopt an exit strategy," she said in a floor speech on Nov. 2, 2005. "We did not organize the caucus around the idea that we should stay there for as long as it takes to train Iraqi soldiers and then exit ... we did not try to say when [the U.S. should exit]."

Waters, who tweets sporadically, also posted links Wednesday with her response to the House ethics committee, which has charged her with violating conflict-of-interest rules. It was her third tweet in the month of August.

"For the facts, watch press conference http://cs.pn/a0giRN or read my speech & presentation on ethics allegations http://bit.ly/bK54D2," she said.

She faces a hearing when the House returns from August recess.
