Lawyers for Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) have accused the House ethics committee of violating its rules by allegedly continuing to investigate Waters' case after it filed formal ethics charges.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Stanley Brand and Andrew Herman of Waters' legal team recently wrote to the committee asking it to stop any ongoing investigation.

They also insisted that any evidence collected after Aug. 10, when the charges were filed, should be excluded from hearings likely to take place after Congress retu! rns from recess.

Committee staff have declined to comment on the letter.

Waters is charged with seeking government assistances for a bank for which her husband was a shareholder and which later received $12 million from the stimulus bill.

She has denied wrongdoing.
