The winner of November’s presidential election won’t be selected through Twitter, but plenty of campaign news breaks there. 

In fact, the day’s news cycle can begin with a Twitter conversation the night before. 

Following this month’s Twitter version of “mommy wars” fought between a Democratic strategist and Mitt Romney’s campaign, Sam Youngman of Reuters pointed out that these Twitter skirmishes “create what amount to several news cycles in a single day, with waves of messages - each of them less than 140 characters.”

This may be what Twitter CEO Dick Costolo meant when he called 2012 the year of “the Twitter election.”
