postheadericon Romney campaign haunts Santorum with Specter support

Mitt Romney's presidential campaign is looking to haunt Rick Santorum's record with his past support of former Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.), doubling down in their criticism with in a new web video released Friday.

The video asks: "If Rick Santorum couldn’t say no to liberal Arlen Specter, can you really trust him to change Washington?”

The new web video doubles-down on Romney's attack on Santorum during the GOP debate Wednesday night. Romney's campaign is looking to remind conservative voters that in 1996 and 2004, Santorum endorsed Specter in hotly contested primary races over candidates considered more conservative.

The video conflates Santorum's record with Specter's, accusing both of voting for "liberal Circuit Judge Sonia Sotomayor" and siding with big labor "against right-to-work."

When Santorum endorsed Specter, he was running as a Republican. Specter later switched his party affiliation to Democrat. Specter was "the deciding vot! e on Obamacare," according to the video and to Romney during the debate.

Santorum defended himself during the debate by saying he made a deal with Specter, who promised to support former President George Bush's Supreme Court nominees. Specter later denied that there had ever been a deal.
