postheadericon 12 down, 16 to go: Georgia GOP schedules new presidential debate

The Georgia Republican Party announced Tuesday that it planned to host a GOP presidential debate March 1, just five days before the March 6 Super Tuesday contest.

With the addition of the Georgia debate, Republican candidates have 16 contests scheduled between now and mid-March of 2012. The candidates have already completed 12 debates.

The contest should be of particular interest if the popularity of businessman Herman Cain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich hold - both men are near the top of Republican national polls, and both hail from the state.

"The road to the White House in 2012 runs straight through Georgia, and I look forward to welcoming the Republican presidential candidates to the Peach State for our Super Tuesday Presidential Debate," said Georgia Republican Party Chair Sue Everhart in a statement.
