postheadericon Republicans line up behind Sen. Johnson for leadership job

A group of Senate Republicans on Wednesday threw their support to freshman Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) for a job in the GOP leadership.

Leadership positions were put up for grabs this week after Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) announced he would step down in January as chairman of the Senate Republican Conference.

Alexander’s surprise decision reshuffled the deck of the GOP leadership in the Senate and cleared the way for some Republicans to ascend in rank.

Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) all said Johnson is the right man to take over the vice chairmanship, the No. 5 job in the pecking order.
