postheadericon DNC chairwoman offers NBC's Mitchell 'love' and 'prayers' in response to breast cancer announcement

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) offered her prayers on Wednesday to NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Andrea Mitchell, who announced that she has breast cancer.

"Love & prayers to @mitchellreports as sister survivor of #breastcancer. Bravely sharing personal story of early detection will save lives," Wasserman Schultz tweeted Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday Mitchell announced on MSNBC that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She said that the cancer had not spread and her prognosis was "terrific."

"I had planned to be hiking in Wyoming last week, but! instead discovered that I am now among the one in eight women in this country â€" incredibly, one in eight â€" who have had breast cancer," Mitchell said.

In a statement soon after her tweet, Wasserman Schultz noted that Mitchell's cancer was discovered early.

"Thankfully, like me, Andrea discovered her cancer early. As a breast cancer survivor, I understand intimately how important it is that women have every possible cancer-fighting tool at their disposal," Wasserman Schultz said.

Wasserman Schultz also praised Mitchell's work as a journalist.

"Andrea, you are an invaluable friend, colleague, and now sister in survival. Thank you for the incredible work that you do. Your legions of loyal viewers I am sure join me in praying for your quick and easy recovery and renewal of your good health."
