postheadericon The US and EU have a role to play in Cyprus reunification

July 20 marks the 37th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which resulted in the division of the island. Although 37 years is not a significant anniversary, like a nice round 35th or 40th milestone, it is still a harsh reminder to Cypriots on both sides of the divide that each anniversary marks another year without a final solution to the Cyprus conflict.

Cyprus is a beautiful country located in the eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea. Despite the fact that a green line runs through the country from coast to coast with U.N. troops monitoring a demilitarized zone, Cyprus is a peaceful land with lovely beaches, bustling cities and towns, rugged mountain terrain dotted with historic archeological sites and a long history of occupation and influence by foreign powers. Today the Republic of Cyprus is a member of the European Union and yet, in the past few years, there have not been any major developments toward reunification of the island.
