postheadericon Bachmann a 'no' on McConnell plan

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), a GOP presidential hopeful, ruled out voting for an alternative plan on raising the debt limit proposed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

Asked if she support's McConnell's proposal, Bachmann, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement, told reporters Wednesday that she is a "no on raising the debt limit at this time."

McConnell's plan would put responsibility of raising the debt ceiling with President Obama, requiring the necessary funds come in three bundles of money of which Congress could vote their disapproval. His plan includes spending cuts but conservatives are worried because there’s no guarantee the cuts would pass Congress or survive a veto.

"I’ve been here long enough that I’ve seen a lot of smoke and mirrors but I haven’t been here long enough to forget who I serve or where I come from. And again all I can reiterate is that people across America are saying the sp! ending is what has to be addressed, it’s too much, it’s got to be limited," she said.

She then referenced her travels on the campaign trail, specifically her recent visit to the shop floor of a small company in Iowa - the first in the nation caucus state - where a gentleman shook her hand as he left work, "and said, as President of the United States, I want you to give this country back to the people, because it's not working right now," she said.

The Minnesota lawmaker made the remarks at a press conference on a bill to ensure that military pay continues should negotiators fail to raise the debt ceiling before the Aug. 2nd deadline.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), sponsor of the military pay bill, said that he's "really apprehensive" about McConnell's proposal.

"I just think that's the fox in the hen house," the conservative lawmaker said.
